“My motivation is delivering excellence in eye care.” - Dr Divya Perumal

Dr Perumal is a New Zealand trained Ophthalmologist, with advanced training in Glaucoma and Cataract Surgery. As a former optometrist and vision scientist, Divya has a special understanding of the optics of the eye and the evidence that dictates proper clinical practice.

Starting from a humble beginning in Malaysia, she received the prestigious ASEAN scholarship to study in Singapore and subsequently made Auckland her home. She studied at Epsom Girls Grammar and pursued an honours degree in Optometry from the University of Auckland. She was awarded the Senior Scholarship Award for best overall performance in Optometry (2004) and was actively involved in preparation of the Manual of Ocular Therapeutics for Postgraduate Diploma in Ocular Therapeutics, the first of its kind for therapeutic optometrists in New Zealand.

Inspired by mentors in Ophthalmology, including Prof Charles McGhee, she decided to study medicine at the University of Auckland. There she was awarded the Calvin Ring Prize in Ophthalmology, for the best performance in her field. She subsequently was awarded the Arthur Thomas Paterson Scholarship in Ophthalmology. Divya recently returned to New Zealand, with the goal of offering the best treatment options to her patients. She also works in Greenlane Clinical Center and Waitakere Hospital.

Her enthusiasm and interest in the ophthalmic field is expressed in all that she does, from her warm interactions with patients to her active research and published articles in international peer-reviewed journals.
