Dr Watson’s training & experience

Dr Watson graduated from the University of Otago Medical School in 1991, then training as an ophthalmic surgeon in Australia and Auckland, before completing further subspecialist fellowships at renowned centres in England, including Queen Victoria Hospital and Manchester Royal Eye Hospital.

Dr Watson has experience in the assessment and treatment of difficult surgical cases through his work in centres that other eye doctors refer cases to. He feels that his combination of specialist interests are complementary, enabling him to address the face, eyelids, tear drainage system, surface of the eye and cornea together as a functional unit to give the best possible outcome.

Dr Watson has published several papers internationally as well as a textbook chapter on aspects of LASIK management. He maintains a close relationship with his colleagues around the world to stay up-to-date with the latest research and surgical techniques and speaks at ophthalmic conferences both nationally and internationally.

    Cataract surgery has evolved over the last 15 years from being a purely sight-saving procedure to being a highly accurate and sight-enhancing vision correction procedure. Dr Watson uses the latest technologies and techniques to ensure a comfortable and pleasant experience for you while safely restoring more youthful vision. Additionally, underlying problems such as astigmatism, short-sightedness and long-sightedness are readily corrected. Techniques include:
    • no-needle, painless gel anaesthetic
    • small, sutureless incision technique

With his eye-care team, Dr Watson prides himself on his genuine warmth and empathy, and ability to communicate effectively.

For an efficient and on-time service, Dr Watson’s clinics are booked by Emma Garrett & Ali Taramai and many of the questions regarding insurance, possible costs, and which tests may be needed can usually be answered by Emma and Ali.

Two key members of the team are Catherine Cruz and Raj Maiti. Both are caring and thorough therapeutic optometrists who assist Dr Watson with the individualised assessments required to provide the best care, using the latest equipment.

Dr Watson’s family & personal interests

Adam was lucky to meet Kate, his wife, while working in England. Kate is a trained nurse with special experience in day surgical nursing. Together, they enjoy the region’s beaches, bush and city, exploring new places in New Zealand, and catching up with their family and friends both here and in the UK. They have four children who keep them happily busy at all times.
