About Dr Shanu Subbiah
Dr. Shanu Subbiah is a refractive cataract surgeon. He has dual fellowship training in both retinal and corneal disease, and so has expertise treating conditions that affect both the front and back of the eye. With this broad breadth of experience he provides personalised treatment for all his patients.
Dr Subbiah’s training & experience
Dr. Shanu Subbiah studied Medicine at the University of Aberdeen, graduating in 2000. After working in general and specialist surgery, he then continued his specialist training in Ophthalmology at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast, UK. Dr. Subbiah is a Fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, London.
After his specialist ophthalmology training, he completed fellowships in both anterior segment, cornea and cataract surgery, as well as medical retinal disease at the University of Auckland. He has worked in a national research and evaluation centre for macular degeneration and has been involved in setting up frameworks for cataract service provision in Northern Ireland.
As well as his clinical duties at Eye Institute Dr. Subbiah is a consultant Ophthalmologist at Greenlane Clinical Centre. Dr. Shanu Subbiah is involved in clinical research into macular degeneration and retinal disease; a subject that he has presented on in several international conferences. He is actively involved in regular teaching for optometrists, junior doctors and nurses as well as in training the next generation of ophthalmologists.
At present Dr. Subbiah is present for consultations at Eye Institute Remuera, North and South.

To take the hassle out of finding a clinic close by, Dr Subbiah has clinics in Remuera, St Heliers, Manukau and North Shore. For an efficient and on-time service his clinics are booked by Kushla Brady, and many of the questions regarding insurance, possible costs, and which tests may be needed can usually be answered by Kushla.
Two key members of the team are Catherine Wong and Reuben Gordon. Both are caring and thorough therapeutic optometrists who assist Dr Subbiah with the individualised assessments required to provide the best care, using the latest equipment.
Dr Subbiah's family & personal interests
Shanu is married to Charlotte, an Optometrist whom he met whilst on his fellowship in Auckland. They welcomed the birth of their Son recently and in his spare time he has started exploring his new home of New Zealand, developing his new fledgling hobbies of gardening and kayaking, as well as enjoying the company of Charlotte's three cats - of which he is highly allergic!
