Our Refractive Surgeons are celebrating 20 years of Laser Vision Correction at Eye Institute.

Eye Institute have consistently been the 1st to introduce new technology in New Zealand and it was with great pride and a major advancement that we introduced the first vision correction laser in July 1992.

Read a little more about the historical milestone of LASIK:

MargueriteMarguerite McDonald, MD, FACS
Corneal, Cataract & Refractive Surgery

In New Orleans, Dr. Marguerite McDonald headed the research team investigating the use of the excimer laser for the correction of optical error, and in 1987, she performed the world's first excimer laser treatment on a human eye to treat myopia (short-sightedness). This treatment was called PRK (photo-refractive keratectomy) in which the laser treatment is delivered onto the surface of the eye.

MargueriteIn 1992, this surface PRK treatment was adapted in Europe by Prof Ioannis Pallikaris. He delivered the excimer laser treatment under a very thin corneal flap. This was the birth of LASIK (laser in-situ keratomilieusis), the most significant advance in the history of laser vision correction.

In 2009 Eye Institute were also instrumental in introducing another first in New Zealand and Australia - The new 5th generation IntraLase iFS Advanced Femtosecond Laser system, which revolutionised the safety of the LASIK procedure for patients.

iFS Advanced Femtosecond Laser system at Eye Institute.

This new laser, combined with the iLASIK technology suite, provides the refractive surgeons, Drs Trevor Gray, Nick Mantell, Tony Morris, Peter Ring and Adam Watson, at Eye Institute with the most advanced technologies to give their patients the safest and best outcomes.

The iFS femtosecond laser is capable of creating a corneal flap during the LASIK procedure in less than 20 seconds. It can produce a unique inverted bevel-in side cut angle designed to provide a virtually effortless flap lift, increase post-operative flap adhesion and enhance the biomechanical stability of the post-LASIK cornea.

iFS Advanced Femtosecond Laser system at Eye Institute.

The iLASIK™ procedure comprises the Advanced CustomVue™ excimer laser vision correction procedure using VISX™ Technology, corneal flap creation with the IntraLase™ FS (femtosecond) laser, and WaveScan™ mapping and guidance all from AMO.
