Optometrists Join Mantell Team at Eye Institute
Two optometrists have joined Dr Nick Mantell’s team at Eye Institute. Andrew Gerrie and Malcolm Lowrey will work with Dr Mantell at all three Eye Institute branches - Remuera, North Shore and the new South Auckland clinic.
Dr Mantell said he is fortunate to have a team of very highly trained technicians working with him.
“Recently the practice has grown and with one of our technicians, Jennifer Kinsella, going on maternity leave, we recognised the need to get more help in the clinic. We have had several optometrists working at Eye Institute and found that their high skill set allows them to integrate well and almost immediately into the team. The emphasis of optometry on therapeutics is also appealing to us,” he said.
Andrew and Malcolm will contribute not only to the refractive side of Dr Mantell’s practice but also as skilled practitioners, they will be involved with assessing ocular surface, glaucoma and retinal patients.

"I see their role as expanding significantly over time and I know they are looking forward to the opportunities the position provides and being part of the Mantell team,” he said.
Andrew completed a Bachelor of Science Degree, majoring in Biochemistry/ Molecular Biology and Physiology from Victoria University in Wellington before completing his Masters of Science in Forensic Science from Auckland University in 2001. He started studying for his Bachelor of Optometry degree in 2002, completing it in 2005 with First Class Honours. Andrew is currently completing his TPA for practising ocular therapeutics.
Since completing his optometry degree Andrew has worked in part-time positions at Visique Blockhouse Bay, Vision Specialists, West City and MySight Mt Eden.
