Eye Institute’s surgery patients more comfortable

View PDF ArticleEye Institute has invested in two innovative theatre beds/chairs manufactured in Germany. UFSK-OSYS International specialise in ophthalmic bed/chairs which are placed in over 1500 clinics and hospitals in 31 countries throughout the world.

Dr Peter Hadden trying out the new theatre bed/chair with Dr Peter Ring“Patient comfort is important during surgery. These beds are state-of-the-art and offer so much more in terms of what they can do to help both patient and surgeon,” said Dr Peter Ring. “Patients with back and/or neck problems are particularly appreciative of the unique customised positions that the bed/chair can be converted to,” he added

In collaboration with international trend-setting ophthalmologists, the company engineers long-lasting, high-quality mobile surgical tables and ergonomic surgery chairs specifically for the profession and their surgical needs. The directors of Eye Institute discovered these chairs whilst attending ASCRS in San Francisco recently and ordered two of them.

New Theatre Bed that converts into a chair. The chairs have three pre-programmable table positions and one permanent chair position. At the same time there are adjustable motors for head, back, seat and foot rests. A feature that helped make the decision to choose these particular chairs was the drape support with oxygen connection built into the chair. Patients sit comfortably pre and post-op and stay in the chair whilst it is electronically converted to the comfortable surgery position. Cecilia Chin, head theatre nurse, said patient feedback has been amazing.

“Patients have been truly impressed with the chairs and appreciate not having to transfer from chair to bed to chair,” she said.

The two theatre tables that have been replaced have been donated to the Goroka Eye Clinic run by the Christian Blind Mission (cbm) in Papua New Guinea.
