New Appointment at Eye Institute
Simon Dean MBChB, FRANZCO, FBCLA has joined the Eye Institute team as an Associate.
Simon completed fellowship training in the UK in oculoplastics and ocular oncology in Glasgow, also cataract and anterior segment in Birmingham and Moorfields. He then took up a consultant post at Manukau Superclinic in 2007, working as a full-time consultant. Simon’s ongoing interests there are cataract, paediatric and glaucoma work as well as his oculoplastic sub-speciality and general ophthalmology.
Eye Institute Directors said Simon brings sub-specialties that complement the spectrum of services offered by the clinic.
“Having Simon on board also means we have enhanced our ability to provide the highest quality care, with the least delay for our referrers.”
Simon studied medicine at the University of Auckland, qualifying in 1997. He completed training in Ophthalmology in Auckland, and was awarded fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists in 2007. He was also awarded fellowship of the British Contact Lens Association in 2007. In addition to his clinical responsibilities, he has been active in teaching and research, as Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer at the University of Auckland.
Simon has designed and built from scratch a number of ophthalmic devices including an infrared pupillometer, corneal collagen crosslinker, and video meibomographer minimally invasive tear film analyser to mention a few (www.sdz.co.nz). His crosslinking equipment has now led to him being involved in collagen crosslinking research.
He is also a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, a member of the Tear Film and Ocular Surface Society as well as being involved with the RANZCO Scientific Programme Committee.
Keen on the outdoors, Simon likes to get out climbing, surfing and mountain biking whenever possible. He is also an active photographer and to provide counterpoint to his ophthalmic interests, Simon plays double bass in the Auckland Symphony Orchestra. Married to optometrist and researcher Dr Jennifer Craig, they have two children, Cameron (6) and Lachlan (4).
Dr Dean brings to nine the number of ophthalmologists at Eye Institute.
